NYX Butter Gloss (Peach Cobbler) | Review + Swatches

I was looking for a red-orange lip color and I stumbled across NYX's Butter Gloss in Peach Cobbler. I've heard a lot of raves and just general positive feedback about this gloss so I though I'd give it a try (plus BOGO 50% and Ulta and yeah). It'll be a great color for the spring/summer. Anyway, NYX claims that this gloss:
  • "feels like it melts on lips"
  • Is not sticky
  • Has sheer to medium coverage
  • Leaves lips feeling soft and smooth

It's not really buttery feeling (at least this shade), but it is a quality gloss. So if a color intrigues you, I say try it. Read on for a detailed review or skip to the bottom for a list of pros and cons.

Packaging: Every time I saw pictures of this gloss online, I thought the plastic of the tube was opaque since it was the exact same color at the lid. Nope. The tube is actually clear, so kudos to NYX for accurately matching the packaging color to the product color. There's 8mL of product for $5, so it's the same price as the NYX Mega Shine Lip Gloss. However, there's 3mL less product in the Butter Gloss so...

Applicator: The wand is a smallish doe-foot. It's size partially contributes to streaking during application, but so does the amount of product it picks up. Sometimes there's too much on the wand (on the slanted part) so that leads to streaks. Not a big deal because I just scrape off the excess back into the tube before I apply. I prefer a doe-foot over a squeezy-tube any day.

Color/finish/pigmentation: Peach Cobbler is a pink based red-orange, if that makes any sense. It is very similar in color to the NYX Butter Lip Balm in Red Velvet. It is quite bright, but  wearable. There is no shimmer, and it has a juicy, melted-candy-like finish sorta like jelly nail polish, if you're familiar with that. Or as if you melted a Jolly Rancher and made it into a lip gloss. The pigmentation is quite great. It is sheer-medium as NYX claimed.

NYX also recently released several new shades that range from deep to nudes and a couple of brights. It's nice to see the addition of shades beyond the previous abundance of light pinks.

Application: Out of the tube and onto the wand, the gloss looks quite gloopy and thick and horribly sticky :( But it's not! It glides right on the lips in a thin layer full of color. However, streaks are susceptible with this gloss, so I have to make sure to not apply too much product by scraping off the excess in the tube. This is why this gloss isn't very buildable. The streaks are avoidable, but in terms of fixable, it can be time consuming. It can obviate dry areas since gloss tends to collect and pool around those areas. But minor dry spots are fine.

Texture: This gloss in this particular shade doesn't feel like melted butter. It's more like warm syrup, because it is slightly sticky and not as thin as butter. It still feels nice, though, except on the outer corners it can feel a bit stickier. It has the right consistency, not watery thin or honey thick. Its finish reminds me of candy, as if you melted a Jolly Rancher and made it into a lip gloss. Sometimes it feels like it travels outside my lip line, but it actually doesn't. It also seals in moisture, but doesn't necessarily hydrate.

Scent/taste: A very sweet scent is present, but it's not the kind of sickeningly sweet butterscotch smell but the warm butterscotch undertone. Still not a huge fan of the scent though. It has no taste, so +1 for lasting power, eh?

Longevity: This lasts about 4-5 hours which is pretty good for a gloss. It does feel stickier as it wears off and it leaves a light stain.

Ingredients: mineral oil, polybutene, diisostearyl malate, beeswax, ceresin, silica, dimethyl silylate, polyethylene, sorbitan sesquioleate, phenoxyethanol, fragrance.

May contain: titanium dioxide (CI 77891), iron oxides (CI 77499, 77491, 77492), manganese violet (CI 77742), red 6 (CI 15850), red 7 lake (CI 15850), red 28 lake (CI 45410), yellow 6 lake (CI 15985), yellow 5 lake (CI 19140).

Pros:
  • Pigmented
  • Juicy finish
  • Comfortable consistency
  • Non-drying
  • Doe-foot applicator
  • Affordable
  • Lasts 4-5 hours

Cons:
  • Becomes stickier as it wears off
  • Streaky application if you don't wipe off the excess

Almost a daily listen.

p.s. I've had this post sitting in my drafts for about 2 months but I never got around to posting it because I had to test the gloss's longevity. And, hey, more than one post in one month, heh?
